Walking on MarsPosted by liaso (Bay Area, United States) on 11 June 2008 in Landscape & Rural. Okay, so really this was while I walked the Tongariro Crossing in the North Island of New Zealand. But this area felt a little bit like Mars. If you had to walk up, up, and up to get there and there was snow, that is. It was a beautiful walk. Not cold, unfortunately, as I was thus carrying gear I didn't use for the 17km walk. It was an absolutely gorgeous day. Perfect for the crossing. Plus, clear views to all the surrounding mountains and lakes. Getting to the Red Crater was challenging, but I did it. Yea! And then it was mostly downhill or flat from there, with just a few little climbs along the way.
