Best of the Zoo IX: An Antartic Kiss

Posted by liaso (Bay Area, United States) on 14 December 2007 in Animal & Insect.

We have now jumped five years forward from my visit to the zoo in China. The year is 2006, the zoo is in Edinburgh, and overall my pictures are not as numerous or as interesting. Except for the penguins. Edinburgh zoo is known for its penguins, and has at least three different types of penguins in the large enclosure that is the highlight of the zoo. (They also have a large monkey population with dozens of different types of monkeys, apes, and chimpanzees. However, my pictures of them didn't really turn out.)

When I arrived at the zoo, the penguins were in the midst of the mating season. Some penguins were choosing mates (although that phase was almost completely over) while others had already laid eggs. The penguins were a kick to watch, and I was lucky to catch moments like this one. I took a lot of pictures of the penguins: standing with their egg, swimming in the water, "kissing", etc. More of those pictures on Monday. In the meantime, the next two days will be zoo free.
